WAFCON: Madugu addresses Okoronkwo choosing to shoot over passing to Oshoala

Coach Justin Madugu defends Esther Okoronkwo’s decision to shoot instead of passing to Asisat Oshoala during Nigeria’s narrow defeat to Cameroon at WAFCON.

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has clarified why Esther Okoronkwo chose to take a shot rather than setting up Asisat Oshoala during Nigeria’s 1-0 loss to Cameroon in the WAFCON quarter-finals. In the final minutes of Sunday’s match, Okoronkwo found herself in a promising position to equalize. However, she bypassed Oshoala, who was positioned more favorably, and her resulting attempt went wide, leading to a goal kick for Cameroon.

Addressing the play during his post-match press conference, Madugu noted that Esther likely believed she could convert the chance herself. While the coach acknowledged that passing to Oshoala might have been the better tactical choice, he dismissed any notion of internal conflict within the squad, stating that there is no division among the players.
