A family in Colombia filmed their frantic exit from their residence as a major seismic event struck the region. Liliana Pérez Ocampo managed to lead her family to safety just as a 7.4 magnitude earthquake began to tear through their home this past Monday.
Pérez Ocampo explained to the BBC World Service that the family initially assumed it was a standard, minor tremor. However, as the shaking intensified and lasted well beyond 30 seconds, they understood the severity of the situation. Her family, including two children who were at school during the event, remained unharmed.
Reflecting on the experience, she emphasized that while possessions can be replaced, the safety of her family is what matters most. Data from the country’s Geological Service indicates that this incident was the most powerful earthquake in Colombia during the 21st century, with a death toll reaching at least 132 individuals.
