The Idoma Association USA (IAUSA) has decided to escalate the deteriorating security situation in Benue South to the highest levels of the United States government. During their 30th Annual Convention in Virginia Beach, the group announced its intention to submit a formal position paper to the U.S. President detailing the humanitarian and security crises affecting the region.
The association expressed deep alarm regarding the ongoing violence, killings, and mass displacement of residents in the Benue South Senatorial District. They are urging both the Nigerian federal and state authorities to implement firm measures to halt these tragedies, emphasizing that the frequent loss of life cannot be accepted as routine.
A primary goal for the organization is to facilitate a meeting between the Och’Idoma V, Agaba’Idu John Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji, and members of the U.S. Congress. By providing a platform for the traditional ruler to speak on these issues, the diaspora hopes to secure greater international diplomatic and humanitarian assistance. J.P. Paige, a statesman from Norfolk, Virginia, attended the event and pledged his support in helping deliver the petition to the U.S. President.
The Och’Idoma V previously addressed the convention, confirming that the traditional council is working with various partners to restore stability. The IAUSA underscored the need for unity between traditional institutions, civil society, and government entities. Furthermore, they encouraged citizens in Benue South to prioritize accountability and competence when selecting leaders, urging them to resist political corruption.
