The United States House of Representatives recently passed an amendment that raises the suspension of aid to Nigeria from 50 percent to 100 percent. This measure will remain in effect until the Nigerian government demonstrates meaningful progress in curbing violence and safeguarding its population.
Introduced by Representative Gregory Steube, who represents Florida’s 17th Congressional District, the motion passed via a voice vote this Wednesday. The previous legislative proposal aimed to withhold half of the allocated funding until the US Secretary of State could confirm that Nigerian authorities were actively preventing violence and prosecuting those responsible.
Steube argued that keeping half of the funding active effectively subsidizes a government that has not fulfilled its primary duty to protect its citizens. He highlighted the ongoing suffering of religious minorities, including Christians, who have been targeted by extremists. According to Steube, the prevalence of kidnappings, arson, and mass killings against these groups necessitates a full suspension of financial support. He contended that if conditions for aid are significant enough to warrant withholding half the funds, they should justify a total freeze. Furthermore, he questioned the ethics of utilizing American tax dollars to support a regime he characterized as corrupt, particularly as the United States manages its own mounting national debt.
