US and Iran escalate military conflict following deadly Jordan attack

Hostilities have intensified between Washington and Tehran after two US soldiers were killed in Jordan, leading to retaliatory airstrikes and drone attacks on regional military bases.

The United States conducted a new wave of airstrikes against Iran on Saturday, focusing on air defense and coastal surveillance systems. US Central Command confirmed these operations successfully degraded Iranian military infrastructure, while Iranian state media reported impacts on Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz.

These actions were a direct retaliation for a recent assault in Jordan that resulted in the deaths of two American service members, with a third soldier still unaccounted for. The US military stated these operations aim to neutralize Iranian threats to commercial maritime traffic in the region and hold the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps accountable.

In response, Iranian forces claimed to have launched drone strikes against US military depots in Kuwait, including sites at Camp Udairi and Ali Al Salem Air Base. The recent military activity marks the eighth consecutive night of hostilities, following the collapse of a brief ceasefire agreement last month. President Donald Trump officially declared the diplomatic efforts concluded on July 8.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth honored the fallen troops, emphasizing that the US resolve remains firm despite the rising casualties. With the loss of a Navy pilot earlier this week, the total count of American fatalities in this conflict has reached 16.
