United States Suspends Iranian Oil Sanctions Until August 2026

The US Treasury has paused sanctions on Iranian oil exports through August 2026, citing progress in maritime security negotiations and cooperation with nuclear inspectors.

The United States government has officially removed sanctions on Iranian oil exports, with the measure set to remain in effect until August 21, 2026. This directive was issued by the US Treasury Department on Monday.

According to the department, the goal of this temporary reprieve is to facilitate the production, distribution, and sale of Iranian crude oil and its derivatives. Officials confirmed that all activities previously under restriction regarding the transport and trade of these products are now permitted until the deadline expires at 12:01 am eastern daylight time on August 21, 2026.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained that the decision stems from Iran’s active participation in discussions aimed at maintaining secure and unobstructed passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, Secretary Bessent noted that Iran’s decision to grant International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors access to their facilities served as a primary factor in the choice to temporarily halt the enforcement of these sanctions.
