The United Kingdom has recorded its highest June temperature ever, with the mercury hitting 36.1C in Gosport, Hampshire, on Wednesday. This measurement surpassed the previous records set in 1976 and 1957, though the Met Office is currently verifying the data as provisional.
In response to the extreme conditions, a rare red warning for heat has been issued for parts of England and Wales. Hundreds of schools have closed, and major transport providers are urging the public to avoid non-essential travel due to significant service disruptions. The Met Office reports that these conditions are expected to persist, with some areas potentially seeing temperatures climb as high as 38C.
Professor Stephen Belcher, chief scientist at the Met Office, stated that such extreme weather is a consequence of climate change, which is fueling more frequent and intense heatwaves. Health authorities have warned of potential dangers to the entire population, including risks of serious illness and accidents related to water safety. Throughout the country, workers are adjusting their schedules, with many beginning their shifts earlier in the day to avoid the most intense heat.
