UK anticipates arrival of third heatwave with temperatures set to top 30C

A third heatwave is expected to bring temperatures over 30C to large parts of the UK, with the warm spell potentially lasting until mid-July.

Forecasters anticipate that sweltering conditions will return to portions of the UK this weekend, with thermometers likely to surpass 30C. This upcoming event would represent the third heatwave of the year for some regions.

Southern and south-eastern England may see peaks of 33C, while South Yorkshire could reach 30C. Although this heat will not match the intensity of June’s record-breaking event, experts believe it could persist through the middle of July. The surge is driven by high pressure from the Azores, which will clear the way for sunny, stable weather while keeping Atlantic low-pressure systems at bay.

Official heatwave criteria—which require three consecutive days meeting specific regional temperature thresholds—are likely to be met in several areas. Western regions, including Northern Ireland, the Lake District, and western Scotland, should remain cooler in the mid-20s due to a prevailing Atlantic breeze.

The UK Health Security Agency has responded by issuing yellow heat health alerts for the East and West Midlands, London, and the south-east and south-west of England. These warnings remain in effect from Saturday through the evening of July 11, citing potential health risks for vulnerable populations as the mercury rises.
