Businessman and digital commentator Uche Rochas recently stated that Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, will not appear on the ballot for the 2027 general election. His comments follow a contentious Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja that reversed a prior order requiring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC.
Justice Isah Dashen, who issued the ruling, explained that the original judgment ignored the interests of the Peace Movement Party (PMP). The PMP argued that the NDC was utilizing their specific logo without authorization. This legal development has sparked significant concern, with opposition groups claiming the current administration under President Bola Tinubu is maneuvering to prevent competition in the next election cycle.
Addressing the situation on his X account, Rochas asserted that Obi would not be a candidate in 2027. He expressed sympathy for individuals who invested personal time and resources into the NDC, suggesting that those assets are now lost. Supporters of Obi remain apprehensive about these efforts to invalidate the party’s registration status.
