President Donald Trump has announced that urgent repairs will commence at the Washington DC Reflecting Pool after he assessed the site from his helicopter while returning from Camp David. Despite a recent 13 million dollar refurbishment, the historic landmark continues to struggle with persistent algae growth and reports of vandalism.
The administration claims the structure was deliberately damaged, with Trump highlighting reports of a 250-foot gash in the facade. US Attorney for Washington DC, Jeanine Pirro, emphasized that those responsible for vandalism will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Official reports indicate that law enforcement arrested five individuals and issued citations to five others over the weekend regarding these disturbances.
Among those caught in the legal net was former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who was arrested on Friday. Hearn maintains his innocence, stating he was merely inspecting the paint and did not cause any damage. Meanwhile, experts like Professor Rosalina Stancheva Christova suggest the green algae present in the pool, identified as Desmodesmus, is generally harmless, though officials are treating the water with hydrogen peroxide to manage its spread. The pool, which spans over 2,000 feet between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, remains a challenging maintenance project due to ongoing structural and environmental issues.
