Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized Nigerian political parties for their lack of clear ideology. He claimed that politicians accused of graft seem to have their reputations restored immediately upon joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Regarding the 2027 election, Obi downplayed the importance of state governors endorsing President Bola Tinubu. He argued that governors often act independently of the public’s actual desires. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he warned that the current administration is actively working to destabilize opposition groups, citing internal struggles within the ADC, NDC, and Labour Party as evidence of a deliberate strategy.
Obi called upon the Nigerian youth to demand a free and fair electoral process, framing this as a potential legacy-defining move for President Tinubu. He referenced the late President Yar’Adua as a model of leadership, noting how he prioritized electoral integrity even at personal political cost. Obi emphasized that Nigeria requires leaders defined by competence, character, and compassion rather than those currently in power who he claims suppress political stability.
The former presidential hopeful promised that if elected, he would foster a environment where opposition parties can operate effectively. He pledged to limit government interference in party affairs and ensure the judiciary remains independent, aiming to stop the practice of using legal rulings to sow chaos within rival political organizations.
