Trump Leads Kamala in Polls After Winning Key Battleground State of North Carolina

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has won North Carolina, securing the first major battleground state of the election and solidifying the Republican Party’s hold on the state’s 16 electoral votes.

Voters across all 50 states and the District of Columbia participated in the presidential race between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump.

Presidents are elected through the Electoral College, and a candidate needs at least 270 Electoral College votes to win. Most states allocate all of their Electoral College votes to the winner of the state’s popular vote, though Nebraska and Maine split their votes.

Polls had indicated that Vice President Kamala Harris had been narrowing Trump’s lead in North Carolina after she entered the race in July, following President Joe Biden’s decision to abandon his re-election bid.

Democrats had been hopeful that Harris could make inroads with well-educated voters, but Trump managed to secure gains among Black voters, young voters, and made slight headway with independents, ultimately helping him clinch North Carolina.

Black voters made up 19% of the electorate in North Carolina, according to exit polls, and Trump managed to win over 12% of that group—a significant 5-point increase from 2020. What’s even more notable is his 12-point jump among Black men, a shift that could have long-term implications for both parties’ strategies moving forward.

As of now, Trump holds 246 electoral votes, while Kamala Harris has 189. With 270 needed to win, this race is far from over, but Trump’s ability to broaden his appeal among key demographic groups like Black voters and young people is shaping up to be a game-changer.

Trump’s victory in North Carolina underscores the enduring strength of his MAGA political movement. It marks the third consecutive time he has won the battleground state, despite being impeached twice during his presidency and facing four separate criminal indictments after leaving office in 2021.

For Kamala Harris, the most promising route to victory now hinges on winning the three key “blue wall” states—Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin—that Trump flipped in his unexpected 2016 win over Hillary Clinton. However, as of press time, Trump holds a lead in all three states.
