Trump Calls on Australia to Protect Iranian Women’s Soccer Team Amid Persecution Fears
President Donald Trump has called on the Australian government to provide asylum to the Iranian women’s national soccer team following their exit from the Asian Cup.
Concerns for the athletes’ safety escalated after they were labeled “traitors” by Iranian state media for refusing to sing the national anthem during their opening match in Gold Coast.
The situation grew more urgent after a player was observed using a universal “SOS” hand signal from the team bus following their 2-0 loss to the Philippines.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump warned Prime Minister Anthony Albanese that deporting the team would be a “terrible humanitarian mistake,” suggesting the players face execution upon return.
He further offered that the United States would host the team if Australia declined. Meanwhile, FIFA has confirmed it is coordinating with local officials to prioritize the squad’s security.

The Players’ union FIFPRO expressed concern over the group’s lack of communication, urging governing bodies to ensure the athletes can choose their own path, whether that involves seeking refuge or returning home.
The situation is further complicated by heightened regional instability following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, which have disrupted international travel and cast doubt on upcoming World Cup playoff schedules.
Amidst this geopolitical friction, Iraq’s coach, Graham Arnold, has proposed a revised playoff format that could potentially see Iraq replace Iran in the World Cup should the latter be forced to withdraw.
