Troy Deeney Labels England Wingers Arrogant Following World Cup Victory Over Panama

Troy Deeney criticized England’s wingers as arrogant and wasteful following a 2-0 World Cup win against Panama, citing high turnover rates and a lack of respect for their opponents.

Former Wolverhampton skipper Troy Deeney heavily criticized England’s attacking players after their 2-0 World Cup win against Panama. Despite manager Thomas Tuchel making five changes to the starting lineup following a disappointing draw with Ghana, the team struggled to find a consistent rhythm.

Deeney pointed to the high number of lost possessions as evidence of a poor performance, highlighting 14 turnovers for Bukayo Saka, 20 for Marcus Rashford, and 7 for Noni Madueke. He argued that these statistics were only defensible if the players were actively creating genuine threats, which he felt they failed to do. The pundit specifically highlighted a poor touch from substitute Madueke that resulted in the ball going out of play, alongside frustration with Rashford’s repetitive and ineffective attempts to cut inside.

The former captain dismissed the performance as arrogant and ignorant. He suggested that the English players seemingly assumed they were superior due to their club affiliations without respecting the commitment of their opponents. Deeney emphasized that players representing Panama were highly motivated to perform on a global stage, and he felt the English wingers underestimated the opposition’s drive.
