Following France’s 2-0 loss to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final, captain Kylian Mbappe publicly analyzed his team’s shortcomings. The defeat, which occurred at Dallas Stadium, denied France a third straight final appearance. Mbappe specifically pointed to a failed pressing strategy, noting that the French midfield struggled to contain Rodri and Fabián Ruiz.
“We struggled with our formation against theirs,” Mbappe explained. “Communication during our press was insufficient, and we should have utilized a man-to-man approach to disrupt their rhythm.” He acknowledged that France was technically and tactically inferior throughout the match, failing to impose their desired high-pressure style.
Spain secured their victory through goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro. Despite late substitutions like Désiré Doué and Rayan Cherki, France could not recover. Cherki later admitted that Spain displayed greater hunger and superiority across the pitch. Mbappe accepted personal responsibility for the result, stating that the squad failed to execute necessary components for a semi-final win. France will compete in the third-place play-off on Saturday.
