Tragedy In Gwagwalada: Motorcycle Snatchers Kill NYSC Member With Hammer
In a deeply harrowing incident that has sent shockwaves through the Federal Capital Territory, Shuaibu Adamu, a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), was brutally murdered by suspected motorcycle thieves in Gwagwalada Area Council.
The attack took place around 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2025, behind the AA Rano filling station along the Abuja-Lokoja highway. Adamu, who had just visited a family member, was riding his motorcycle home when a group of hoodlums ambushed him. Armed with a hammer, they smashed his head, stole his bike, and fled the scene under the cover of night.
According to Suleiman Ibrahim, a local resident of Gwargwada, passersby who later recognized Adamu raised the alarm, prompting relatives to rush him to the hospital. Tragically, he was pronounced dead the following night, Monday, July 14, by medical personnel. His body was laid to rest in Abaji on Tuesday in accordance with Islamic rites.
Shuaibu Adamu was a native of Abaji Area Council and the son of Alhaji Salihu Kankamba, the district head of Unguwar Sabon-Tasha. A graduate of Political Science from Federal University Gashua, Yobe State, he was posted to a secondary school in Kogi LGA, Kogi State for his national service.
He had only traveled to Gwagwalada for a short visit—a stop that would become his final journey.
Speaking to Daily Trust, the bereaved father, Alhaji Salihu Kankamba, said:
“I am heartbroken beyond words. I pray Allah grants him Jannatul Firdaus and punishes those responsible for this wickedness.”
The murder of Adamu has reignited public outcry over the growing wave of motorcycle-related violence in the FCT and neighboring areas, with calls mounting for better protection for corps members and swifter justice against violent crime.
The FCT Police Command has yet to issue a formal statement on arrests or leads in connection to the killing.
As the nation mourns yet another young life lost to senseless violence, the question remains: How many more bright futures will be extinguished before safety is made a priority?
