Tension has risen at the Osun State University (UNIOSUN) Ifetedo campus following the passing of Grace Osunlakin, a final-year student studying Criminology and Security Studies. Students organized demonstrations, claiming that poor medical care at the school clinic led to her death. They stated that Osunlakin, who suffered from asthma, initially visited the health centre for treatment but was sent back to her hostel. When her health declined later that night, students reported finding the clinic closed, which delayed life-saving intervention.
The university leadership has firmly rejected these accusations. Spokesperson Adesoji Ademola clarified that the student had not visited the university health facility on the night of her passing. According to the school, after returning from a religious gathering, Osunlakin experienced severe abdominal pain. Her housemate, Durosinmi Mariam, assisted her when she collapsed. Despite difficulties navigating local Oro ritual restrictions, she was eventually taken to the Community Health Centre in Ikija by motorcycle.
University officials stated that the student was unresponsive upon reaching the community facility. She was later taken to Goshen Specialist Hospital in Ondo, where medical personnel confirmed she had passed away. The university extended its sympathies to her family, reiterating that the medical records and timeline of events do not support claims of institutional negligence.
