Tiwa Savage Opens Up On Sex Tape Scandal, Celibacy, And Healing Journey
Nigerian Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has spoken candidly about her 2021 leaked sex tape, revealing it was shared as part of a bet an ordeal she described as one of the most painful chapters of her life.
In an interview with The Breakfast Club released Tuesday, Savage said while she initially masked her hurt with humour and music, the scandal left lasting scars. “I was hurt… I was a victim,” she said, admitting she never fully dealt with the trauma.
The singer disclosed that her then-partner had claimed the video was leaked accidentally but she later learned it was circulated among his friends as a wager. Attempts to pursue legal action proved too emotionally draining.
Public backlash, Savage noted, was even more crushing than the tape itself, especially when critics dragged her son into the controversy. “They said I was unfit… that my son would grow up and be disappointed in me. That hurt more than the actual thing,” she confessed.
The incident has shaped her artistry, with some songs too raw for her to perform. “Even now when I listen to the album, I skip that. I haven’t been able to perform it. It was tough,” she said.
Despite the ordeal, Savage credited her family particularly her mother’s unwavering support and therapy for helping her heal.
She also revealed she has remained celibate for three years, insisting intimacy now only comes with meaningful connection. “I’ve gone like maybe three years without. I don’t have toys… maybe that’s what people should get me for Christmas,” she quipped.
