Texas Flood Disaster: Over 100 Dead As Rescue Efforts Continue
Austin, Texas: The death toll from severe flooding in central Texas has risen to over 100, authorities confirmed on Monday, following a weekend of torrential rain that left devastation across multiple counties.
Among the victims were at least 27 girls and counsellors attending Camp Mystic, a popular Christian summer camp located along the Guadalupe River. The floods struck during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, overwhelming communities with little warning.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott described the situation as a “devastating tragedy,” noting that the full scale of destruction was still unfolding. “There is still a threat of heavy rain with the potential to cause further flooding,” Abbott said in a statement, urging residents to remain vigilant.
The disaster prompted a major rescue and recovery operation involving more than 1,750 personnel, supported by helicopters, boats, and K9 units. Search teams continue combing affected areas for the missing, with concerns that the death toll could still climb.
Children Swept Away In Camp Tragedy
The hardest-hit region was Kerr County, where the Guadalupe River runs through several communities. Local authorities there confirmed 84 fatalities, including 28 children the majority of whom were from Camp Mystic.
Eyewitnesses described how the river rose more than 26 feet (8 meters) in under an hour, submerging cabins and reaching treetops. Some campers were reportedly asleep when the water inundated the area.
Personal items including teddy bears, backpacks, and blankets were found scattered and caked in mud. Cabins suffered extensive damage, with shattered windows and waterlogged interiors.
Federal Response And Political Reactions
President Donald Trump announced plans to visit Texas on Friday to survey the damage. He also signed a major disaster declaration, unlocking emergency federal funds.
The White House has rejected claims that federal budget cuts to weather agencies hampered the disaster response.
“Blaming President Trump for these floods is a depraved lie,” said Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, insisting the National Weather Service (NWS) provided “timely and precise forecasts.”
However, residents and experts have raised concerns about a lack of effective warning systems in the area, particularly in rural regions often hit by flash floods. evilynink fucks
Calls For Better Emergency Alerts
Critics argue that inadequate warning dissemination not forecasting contributed to the loss of life. Nicole Wilson, a San Antonio mother whose daughters nearly attended Camp Mystic, has launched a petition demanding the implementation of a statewide emergency siren system.
“Five minutes of that siren going off could have saved every single one of those children,” Wilson told AFP.
The incident has renewed scrutiny on Texas’ vulnerability to extreme weather. The central and southern parts of the state, often dubbed “Flash Flood Alley,” are known for sudden, intense rainfall events, a phenomenon scientists say is becoming more frequent due to climate change.
A Community In Mourning
Candlelight vigils were held Monday night across cities including San Antonio and Austin, where mourners gathered to remember those lost and pray for the missing.
“I was shocked by how fast everything happened,” said Rebeca Gutierrez, 29, at the vigil. “It’s terrifying. We need to be better prepared.”
Volunteers have also joined the search effort, many motivated by personal connections to victims. One volunteer, Louis Deppe, said he was helping the parents of two missing girls. “The last message they got was: ‘We’re being washed away,’ and then the phone went dead,” he said.
With more rain forecasted this week, officials are urging communities to remain alert as emergency teams work to restore order and prevent further loss.
