Texas Flash Floods Result in One Fatality in Region Haunted by Past Tragedy

At least one person has died following severe flooding in central Texas, a region still recovering from the memory of devastating flash floods that killed over 130 people last year.

A severe flooding event is unfolding across central Texas, with Governor Greg Abbott confirming at least one death linked to the rising waters. This region is the same location where more than 130 individuals, including campers at Camp Mystic, perished during devastating floods last summer.

The National Weather Service in San Antonio issued urgent warnings as the Guadalupe River surges, noting that water levels rose 32 feet in just four hours. Authorities have facilitated approximately 80 rescues so far, emphasizing that the individual who died was not part of any camp. Residents in affected areas such as Uvalde, Kerr, and Kendall counties were strongly encouraged to evacuate early Thursday morning.

Local accounts describe harrowing scenes, including vehicles submerged in brown floodwaters and rescue workers carrying children to safety. Resident Carter Lopez reported assisting neighbors as water breached homes in Boerne, noting the sudden and unpredictable nature of the current surge. The flooding also engulfed the Rodeo Los Corrales Dance Hall in Comfort. Camp Mystic, the site of a tragic loss of 25 lives in 2025, has remained closed and has filed for bankruptcy.
