The recent signing of Scottish forward Ross Stewart on a three-year contract has brought competition to the front line, joining existing players Zan Vipotnik and Adam Idah.
Matos clarified that Stewart was acquired due to his specific profile and experience, not because the club intends to offload Vipotnik or Idah. The manager emphasized the importance of squad depth, noting that the heavy fixture list in the upcoming 2026-27 season requires multiple options to ensure long-term success.
Addressing concerns regarding Stewart’s fitness history, Matos expressed confidence in the team’s medical and fitness staff to manage the 30-year-old effectively. While Stewart arrived as a free agent following his departure from Southampton, he will miss the upcoming EFL Cup opener against Birmingham City to focus on his conditioning. With Vipotnik also managing a quad injury, Adam Idah is expected to lead the attack for the season-opening match.
