Authorities in Glasgow have taken a 29-year-old man into custody in connection with a racially motivated assault on a delivery driver. The arrest occurred in the city’s Govan district following an incident that took place last month during civil unrest.
The victim, 31-year-old Muhammad Jawad Yaqoob, was targeted on July 25 near Glasgow Green, where a traffic cone was thrown at him following an anti-immigration demonstration. Footage of the encounter circulated widely online, capturing the moment perpetrators hurled racial slurs before striking at him with the object. Yaqoob, who sought refuge in a nearby restaurant, later expressed significant emotional distress and anxiety regarding his safety and job security.
Police Scotland reported that this incident occurred amid broader disorder involving various groups on the same weekend as the Commonwealth Games. While fifteen individuals were arrested on the day of the initial protests, a dedicated team of investigators continues to pursue further leads. Officials confirmed that additional arrests are anticipated as they review evidence to hold all involved parties accountable.
