In a targeted operation against maritime crime, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder intercepted eight individuals suspected of oil theft and recovered approximately 44,000 litres of illicitly refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) in Rivers State.
Commodore Mutalib Ibikunle Raji, the Commander of NNS Pathfinder, revealed that the mission was executed on Sunday, March 22, 2026, following the receipt of reliable intelligence regarding illegal bunkering within the Obologo and Degema regions.
During the high-stakes nighttime patrol, naval officers encountered a vessel guarded by armed associates who escaped upon the arrival of the authorities.
A thorough inspection of the abandoned site led to the discovery of 423 bags, each containing roughly 106 litres of illegally processed diesel. This enforcement action was conducted under the framework of Operation Delta Sentinel, a strategic initiative mandated by the Chief of Naval Staff to eliminate crude oil theft and protect the nation’s maritime assets.
While the lead suspect, identified as Sokari, claimed the group acted merely as hired loaders unaware of the operation’s criminal nature, the Navy has handed all suspects and seized materials over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further legal action.
The EFCC’s Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate has pledged a comprehensive investigation into the matter, asserting that all guilty parties will face prosecution.
This successful interception highlights the intensified efforts of security agencies to dismantle the sophisticated networks of economic sabotage and illegal refineries currently operating within the Niger Delta.
