Suspect Apprehended During Vehicle Theft Attempt at Umuahia Church

A man identified as Kalu Ojo was arrested for attempting to steal a vehicle parked outside the Assemblies of God Church in Umuahia, an act thwarted by the church’s proactive security team.

A man was taken into custody on Sunday in Umuahia, Abia State, after he was caught trying to steal a vehicle parked near the Assemblies of God Church on Item Street. This event follows a June 7 theft at the same location, where a car belonging to the wife of a local traditional ruler was stolen, prompting church leaders to enhance security.

Witnesses observed the individual, identified as Kalu Ojo, using a spanner to open a parked car. Security members from the church’s Royal Rangers had been monitoring him after noticing suspicious activity. The owner, alerted by the security team, arrived to find his vehicle unlocked with a spanner left behind. Bystanders helped detain Ojo when he attempted to flee the scene.

Kalu Ojo provided inconsistent personal details while being questioned by onlookers. Police officers from the Central Police Station in Umuahia arrived shortly after to take him into custody. Divisional Police Officer Mr. Osage confirmed the arrest and noted that investigators are currently working to determine if the suspect is part of a larger criminal network operating in the city.

This incident reflects a broader trend of vehicle thefts in Umuahia, including previous losses reported by a magistrate and a journalist. Deacon Amos Okoro, the church secretary, stated that the organization has increased its protective measures following several thefts involving vehicle parts and other items. He affirmed the church’s commitment to securing the premises against future criminal activity.
