Surge in Abductions and Fatal Attacks Grips Northern Nigeria

A disturbing wave of violence swept across several Northern Nigerian states in mid-November, marked by multiple terrorist attacks, kidnappings, and fatalities.

Barely a day after the Fegin Baza incident, armed groups assaulted Tsohuwar Tasha village in Zamfara’s Maru Local Government Area on Sunday, November 16, seizing 14 individuals, including eleven women and three children.

The most alarming incident came on Monday, November 17, with the abduction of 25 female students from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State’s Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area.

The assailants stormed the facility, firing indiscriminately, and fatally shot the school’s Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, before taking the girls into the forest.

Also on Monday, a separate group of terrorists targeted Kushe Gugbu in Kaduna State’s Kagarko Local Government Area, kidnapping Catholic Priest Rev. Fr. Bobbo Paschal and several others. During the unprovoked attack, the assailants murdered Rev. Fr. Anthony Yero’s brother, a priest at St. Stephen Parish.

The pattern of violence persisted into Tuesday, when a lethal assault struck the Eruku community in Kwara State’s Ekiti Local Government Area. While attending service at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), three worshippers were killed, and at least 30 people, including the elderly and children, were abducted.

Simultaneously, a military base in Mayenti, Bama Local Government Area, Borno State, was attacked on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of four vigilantes and leaving four soldiers missing. This confrontation followed the Islamic State West Africa Province’s (ISWAP) release of an execution video featuring a Nigerian Army brigadier-general the previous day.

The insecurity culminated on Wednesday when troops dispatched to rescue the kidnapped Kebbi schoolgirls were ambushed by terrorists, leading to injuries among several soldiers.

This occurred just 24 hours after Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, had instructed Operation Fasan Yamma troops to vigorously pursue the criminals responsible for the Maga school abduction.
