Forward Uchenna Kanu revealed that the Nigerian national team remains deeply affected by their recent departure from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The squad, managed by Justine Madugu, lost 1-0 to Cameroon during their quarter-final match held Sunday evening at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.
This victory secured Cameroon a place in the semi-finals against Morocco and guaranteed them an entry into the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Meanwhile, Nigeria must now look toward the upcoming playoffs to maintain their hopes of reaching the Brazil tournament.
Kanu, who plays for Cruz Azul in Mexico, noted that the emotional toll of the loss has been significant. She explained to ESPN that many players were too upset to eat, with several skipping breakfast and lunch entirely. Kanu admitted she struggled to find an appetite until much later in the day, mirroring the collective mood of her teammates.
