Steve Salvin has exited his coaching position at Exeter to join the Wales national team as their full-time forwards coach. Salvin, who has been a member of the Chiefs’ coaching staff since 2021, previously served as an interim member of Sean Lynn’s management team during the Women’s Six Nations.
Salvin is set to begin his new responsibilities with Wales on Monday, 3 August, as the squad starts pre-season preparations for the WXV tournament. Reflecting on the transition, Salvin expressed his enthusiasm for the permanent role, highlighting the unique passion for rugby he experienced within the Welsh setup during his interim stint.
With a background that includes coaching roles at Rotherham, Leeds Carnegie, and Worcester Warriors, Salvin was instrumental in helping Exeter reach the Premiership Women’s Rugby finals in both 2022 and 2023. Wales head coach Sean Lynn praised Salvin’s technical proficiency and his ability to connect with players, noting that his contribution during the Six Nations was significant.
Salvin’s departure creates a vacancy at Exeter, marking the third time in under 18 months the club will seek a head coach. As Exeter enters the era of new ownership under Black Knight Rugby, the club looks to make a fresh appointment following a season that saw them reach the semi-finals under Salvin’s guidance.
