The United States Department of State has confirmed that its diplomatic mission in Abuja will remain fully operational despite recent adjustments to routine visa processing. This clarification follows the announcement of a new policy, taking effect August 1, 2026, which shifts standard visa services from several African nations, including Nigeria, to centralized regional hubs.
These changes are designed to enhance national security, minimize government waste, and improve the consistency of vetting procedures. The Department of State emphasized that the move is an operational realignment rather than a closure of diplomatic posts. Embassies and consulates in the affected regions will continue their standard duties and represent American interests as usual.
Officials noted that this regional hub model has already been deployed successfully in Europe and other parts of Africa. Starting August 1, visa applicants in affected countries must coordinate their appointments and payments through designated processing centers. Existing visa restrictions and policies remain unchanged, and the Abuja embassy will continue to fulfill its regular consular obligations.
