SpaceX Engineer Plans to Liquidate Shares Following Company IPO

Former SpaceX engineer Andre Lavoie is among thousands of employees set to cash in on their stock following the company’s historic Nasdaq listing, even as investors weigh concerns over high AI spending.

Andre Lavoie, a former engineer who joined SpaceX in 2009, holds 200,000 shares valued at approximately $23 million. After 17 years with the company, he intends to sell his stake incrementally, noting that the rapid appreciation of the stock has complicated his financial planning. Lavoie, now 63, plans to invest his earnings into a hotel renovation project and a brewery in Italy.

SpaceX went public on the Nasdaq this past June, resulting in an estimated 4,400 new millionaires among its workforce. While the company achieved a record valuation of over $2 trillion, its recent financial disclosures revealed a quarterly net loss of $143 million, largely due to significant spending on artificial intelligence initiatives. This expenditure has caused some market unease, despite Elon Musk’s optimism regarding the future profitability of the Starlink satellite network.

Market analysts remain divided on the company’s valuation. Critics argue that the stock price is heavily influenced by the personal brand of Elon Musk and concerns over AI-related risks. Conversely, others, such as Bank of America Securities analyst Ron Epstein, maintain that the company’s fundamental achievements in reducing the cost of space flight represent a substantial, long-term business model that justifies its market position.
