Omoyele Sowore, the presidential flagbearer for the African Action Congress, recently shared details about his experience while held at the Kuje correctional center. During a Wednesday address, the activist highlighted the harsh conditions he faced, specifically noting that he was housed among 1,158 detainees, 37 of whom were being treated for tuberculosis.
This account follows a ruling by Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja, who set bail for Sowore at N200 million this past Tuesday. Despite his familiarity with the prison system, which he claimed helped him adapt to the environment, Sowore criticized the severe overcrowding of the facility.
He maintained that detention should never be used as a penalty for individuals who are simply making use of their rights guaranteed by the constitution. Sowore argued that no person should be subjected to incarceration for actions that do not constitute a legal offense or for expressing their civil liberties.
