Solomon Dalung, a former Minister and member of the African Democratic Congress, has dismissed the United States’ recent approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s security strategies. During a Trust TV appearance on Thursday, Dalung argued that this praise is disconnected from the ongoing surge in kidnappings and homicides throughout Nigeria.
Dalung asserted that the favorable American stance is a result of active government lobbying rather than genuine progress. He characterized the report as deceptive, pointing out that northern Nigeria, in particular, continues to suffer from unchecked violence. He argued that international support has failed to curb the activities of bandits and terrorists, noting that criminal groups continue to operate without fear of repercussion.
Regarding the motivation behind the US stance, Dalung suggested that Washington is prioritizing its geopolitical interests in regions like the Middle East, leading it to downplay the severity of Nigeria’s internal crises. He highlighted the recent murders of farmers in Zamfara State as evidence that the violence persists regardless of religious identity.
Finally, Dalung accused the nation’s political elite of ignoring the safety of the public to focus on their 2027 electoral ambitions. He termed the current state of insecurity as a form of conspiracy directed against vulnerable citizens for the sake of political gain.
