Solar eclipse traces path over UK and European nations

A significant solar eclipse has darkened skies across the UK and Europe, marking the most notable such event in the region since 1999 and drawing large crowds of observers.

A rare astronomical event is crossing the United Kingdom and various European regions as the Moon transitions between our planet and the Sun, obstructing a portion of solar light. Edinburgh residents began witnessing the eclipse at 6:28pm BST on Wednesday, with the peak occurring near 7:06pm.

Reports from the BBC indicate that spectators gathered at Calton Hill in Edinburgh to observe the Moon sliding over the Sun. Enthusiasts using telescopes even noted visible sunspots during the transit. Before reaching Scotland, the phenomenon was already underway in Iceland and Greenland, with several other countries bracing for totality.

Across the United Kingdom, forecasts suggested over 90 percent obscuration, marking the most substantial solar event for the nation since 1999. Widespread interest led to massive crowds at viewing points, causing shortages of protective eclipse glasses in some areas. The path of the eclipse moved from northern Russia at 1700 GMT, then traveled across Greenland and Iceland toward Spain. In Spain, the path cut diagonally from the Atlantic coast toward the Mediterranean. This event was particularly significant for Spain, which had not experienced a total solar eclipse in over a century.

Scientific inquiry remains high, with researchers from Ireland preparing to examine the solar corona during the event. Experts continue to caution the public that viewing the sun without certified safety equipment can result in lasting vision impairment.
