Small town of 13,000 earns historic Bundesliga promotion

Elversberg has achieved a historic promotion to the Bundesliga, becoming the smallest town to ever have a team in Germany’s top football division.

Elversberg is set to compete in the Bundesliga for the first time, marking a milestone for one of the smallest towns to ever host a top-flight German football team. The club secured their spot following a 3-0 victory over Preussen Munster.

Bambase Conte and David Mokwa provided an early lead for Elversberg, with Mokwa adding a second goal later in the match to solidify the win. This victory ensures a second-place finish and follows a series of rapid promotions, with the club moving up three times in just five years.

Spiesen-Elversberg, a town of only 13,000 residents, will now feature on the national football stage. Fans celebrated on the pitch of the 10,000-capacity Waldstadion an der Kaiserlinde as the team made history.

To accommodate top-tier requirements, the club is renovating its stadium with plans to expand capacity to 15,000 by 2027.

Founded in 1907 in the Saarland region, the club competed in the fourth tier as recently as the 2021-22 season. This ascent follows a narrow defeat in last year’s promotion play-offs against Heidenheim.

Elversberg will join Schalke in the Bundesliga, while the upcoming promotion-relegation play-off will feature Wolfsburg and Paderborn.
