Six Nigerians freed from detention in Côte d’Ivoire

The Nigerian government has successfully negotiated the release of six nationals detained in Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025 for alleged economic offenses.

The Nigerian authorities have successfully obtained the release of six citizens who had been held in Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025 regarding accusations of economic misconduct. Ministry of Foreign Affairs representative Kimiebi Ebienfa confirmed that four individuals were released on Monday, June 22, followed by the final two on Tuesday, June 23.

This resolution resulted from persistent diplomatic efforts led by the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially recognized Ambassador Nwabiola C. Ezenwa and the embassy personnel for their professional handling of the situation. Throughout the detention period, the embassy ensured the welfare of the citizens and coordinated with Ivorian officials in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice.

The Nigerian government expressed gratitude to the Ivorian government for its cooperation, noting that the strong bilateral relationship between the nations facilitated the outcome. Nigeria reiterated its dedication to safeguarding the rights and dignity of its citizens living abroad through its diplomatic missions. Furthermore, the ministry advised Nigerians living or visiting other countries to adhere strictly to local laws and to remain in communication with their nearest embassy for support.
