Six Coaches Depart Following 2026 World Cup Eliminations

Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as Germany’s coach, becoming the sixth manager to leave his post after a team exit at the 2026 World Cup.

Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as the manager of the German national team following their exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The team failed to reach the Round of 16 after a defeat to Paraguay this past Monday. The German Football Association confirmed his resignation shortly thereafter.

Nagelsmann’s departure follows a string of similar exits at the tournament. He joins Sebastián Beccacece of Ecuador, Ronald Koeman of the Netherlands, Miroslav Koubek of Czechia, Steve Clarke of Scotland, and Hong Myung-bo of South Korea on the list of managers who have left their positions since their teams were knocked out of the competition.

Reflecting on the outcome, Nagelsmann expressed regret for failing to meet expectations and delivering the desired results on the world stage. He had reportedly signaled his intent to resign during private talks with DFB leadership immediately following the elimination in the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Appointed in September 2023, the 38-year-old manager previously led the squad to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, where they were eventually defeated by Spain.
