Former Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira suggests that Cristiano Ronaldo might not remain an automatic starter for the Portugal national team following the appointment of Jorge Jesus. Jesus assumed the head coaching position after Roberto Martinez departed the squad after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
During the tournament held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, Portugal reached the Round of 16 before losing 1-0 to the eventual winners, Spain, courtesy of a late goal from Mikel Merino. While the World Cup marked Ronaldo’s sixth appearance at the competition, he intends to remain part of the international setup under Jesus, who previously coached at Benfica.
Speaking to Antena 1, Vieira expressed confidence in the new manager, noting that Jesus and Ronaldo share a solid connection. Vieira pointed out that Ronaldo realizes his career is nearing its conclusion and will likely accept a rotation role where he does not start every match. Highlighting the professionalism of the new manager, Vieira emphasized that returning to a Portuguese head coach is a vital development for the national side.
Ronaldo, the all-time record goalscorer for Portugal, has netted 146 goals in 233 matches. This total includes 28 goals achieved during his time under Martinez’s leadership.
