Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed that he intends to remain in contact with US President Donald Trump after he steps down as prime minister. While the two leaders initially cultivated a productive rapport, tensions surfaced when Trump criticized Starmer for not allowing UK military bases to be used for early US-led strikes on Iran. Despite these public disagreements, Starmer noted that Trump offered him well wishes regarding his upcoming departure from Downing Street.
During a recent Nato summit in Ankara, Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan presented each participating leader, including Starmer, with a personalized revolver. British officials are currently working to decommission the weapon to ensure it remains non-functional as it is transported back to the UK.
Reflecting on his time in office, Starmer emphasized that his professional connection with Trump remained vital for national security. He highlighted that despite policy friction, the two individuals maintained a working relationship built on mutual recognition of the strategic US-UK alliance. Starmer, who resigned as Labour leader last month, is set to be succeeded in the upcoming leadership contest, with Andy Burnham currently identified as a primary candidate.
Throughout his tenure, Starmer navigated various diplomatic hurdles with Trump, ranging from discussions on shared family values to disputes over trade threats and military cooperation. As the Ankara summit concluded, Starmer expressed optimism regarding the unity of Nato, while Trump signaled satisfaction with the commitment of member states to increase their defense spending.
