Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has denounced the reported destruction of the bridge connecting Alakija and FESTAC in Lagos State. He characterized the actions of scavengers, who extracted iron rods from the bridge’s concrete supports, as a display of profound malice.
Gumi voiced his disapproval on Facebook this Saturday after viewing footage of individuals dismantling the bridge’s structural pillars to salvage metal. He stated that such behavior transcends economic hardship and labeled the perpetrators as inhuman.
The circulating video depicts law enforcement officials dismantling makeshift shelters occupied by scavengers under the structure. An unnamed narrator in the clip claimed that multiple support columns have already been compromised, urging government intervention to stop the vandalism. The observer warned that persistent damage to these pillars, which were erected by the Federal Housing Authority roughly five years ago, threatens the structural safety of the entire bridge.
