Shehu Sani, the former Senator for Kaduna Central, has cautioned members of the legislature against crafting laws solely for personal gain. He delivered this message on Tuesday during the 2026 National Assembly Open Week.
Sani emphasized that legislative tenures are temporary, advising representatives to focus on impactful work that will serve as a lasting legacy after they leave office. He noted that historical memory will not be defined by the mere act of passing bills or conducting oversight, but rather by the stances lawmakers take on sensitive and controversial national issues.
Acknowledging that many have served before and many will follow, Sani urged his colleagues to consider how future generations—including their own families—will perceive their contributions. He also encouraged a strong sense of national pride, telling lawmakers to defend Nigeria’s integrity and highlight the country’s historic contributions to global peace and human dignity.
