On Sunday, the convoy of Cross River State Deputy Governor Dr. Peter Odey experienced a crash on the Ikom-Calabar highway, specifically near Ugep in the Yakurr Local Government Area. The group was traveling back to Calabar following an official visit to the Obanliku Local Government Area.
Fred Abua, the Deputy Governor’s Press Secretary, stated that the incident involved the press crew vehicle and a Hilux truck. According to Abua, the press vehicle suffered a brake failure, which caused the driver to swerve off the road. He confirmed that Dr. Odey remained safe and his own vehicle was not impacted by the collision.
Reports indicate that multiple people within the convoy suffered injuries. An additional source noted that the press bus, carrying staff and appointees, hit sandbag barricades at an Army checkpoint in Ugep after the apparent brake malfunction. While several vehicles sustained damage, the precise number of injured individuals and the full extent of the destruction remain unconfirmed.
