Ali Ndume, the lawmaker representing Borno South, has urged the Nigerian government to transition the Senate into a part-time institution. Under his proposal, senators would receive compensation exclusively for attending plenary sessions or committee meetings, rather than receiving a full-time salary. Ndume explained his position during a Friday interview on Trust TV, highlighting that legislators do not maintain a traditional daily office schedule.
The senator argued that payment should be tied directly to active participation. He noted that the frequent recesses taken by the National Assembly warrant a reevaluation of the compensation structure. Addressing the recent emergency session regarding state policing, Ndume expressed concern over the rapid pace at which the bill was handled. He emphasized that the Senate functions as a council of elders and requires deliberate, thorough analysis of legislation rather than hasty approvals to satisfy executive requests.
