A public disagreement has erupted between Ogun State APC governorship aspirant, Senator Solomon Adeola, and former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo after her departure from the party to the PDP. The conflict centers on allegations of financial impropriety and motives behind political ambitions.
During a session with community leaders in Ilaro, Senator Adeola characterized Obasanjo’s request for campaign expense refunds as an affront to public service. His media aide, Chief Kayode Odunaro, conveyed the senator’s stance that such demands suggest certain politicians treat electoral processes as commercial enterprises. Adeola openly questioned the legitimacy of the reimbursement request, noting that he never requested she run for office. He further argued that legal precedents regarding party defections after May 10, 2026, would disqualify various opponents from the upcoming governorship race.
Conversely, Iyabo Obasanjo has refuted these claims, labeling the senator as dishonest. She clarified that the specific demands—which included a Senate seat, cost recovery for campaign efforts, and integration of her supporters into his campaign—originated from her political base rather than her directly. She maintained that she reached out for a response regarding these issues, which was allegedly ignored until he later attempted to provide money to prevent her exit. Obasanjo stated that Hon. Aroyeun, Chief Toyin Jokosenumi, and Hon. Biodun Ajayi served as the intermediaries for these discussions.
While Adeola also raised questions regarding the organizational stability of the PDP in Ogun State, local market leaders expressed their ongoing support for his candidacy, highlighting his past contributions to trader empowerment.
