President Bola Tinubu has formally authorized the expansion of the Nigerian Army, increasing its organizational structure from eight to twelve divisions. This initiative aims to bolster national security and improve the operational performance of military forces across the country.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the development, noting that the move reflects the administration’s resolve to address modern security threats through enhanced defense capabilities. This expansion complements previous government efforts, which include the authorization to enlist 28,000 new soldiers, the procurement of advanced military hardware, and improvements to overall troop welfare.
The four new divisions will be located in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City. Officials stated that this strategic placement will facilitate better command and control, decentralize tactical decisions, and strengthen the defense of national infrastructure and borders. It is also expected to accelerate response times to insurgencies and internal security risks.
The rollout will occur in two stages. By September 2026, the 5th, 9th, and 10th Divisions will be established alongside a reorganization of existing units. The final phase, which includes creating the 83rd Division, is scheduled for completion by December 2026.
President Tinubu lauded Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, along with the broader military force, for their professionalism and commitment to national integrity. He pledged to maintain government investment in the Armed Forces to ensure they remain well-equipped and effective in their duties.
