Senate Increases Fines for Traffic Violations and Bus Hawking to ₦50,000

The Nigerian Senate has approved the FRSC Act (Amendment) Bill, significantly raising fines for traffic violations, including a ₦50,000 penalty for hawking or preaching in commercial buses.

The Nigerian Senate has finalized the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill of 2026, which introduces steeper penalties for various traffic-related infractions. A core provision of the legislation mandates a ₦50,000 fine for individuals caught selling goods or preaching within commercial vehicles. This measure aims to reduce passenger distractions and bolster safety standards.

The updated laws also target dangerous driving behaviors. Motorists operating vehicles while under the influence of drugs or alcohol now face a ₦100,000 fine, a two-year jail term, or both. Refusing a breathalyzer test administered by an FRSC official on reasonable suspicion will result in a ₦50,000 penalty or up to six months in prison.

Furthermore, penalties for failing to adhere to traffic lights, road markings, and signs have surged to ₦100,000. Speeding and reckless driving are also subject to this ₦100,000 fine, with reckless driving carrying an additional risk of two years imprisonment. The revised legislation covers 52 distinct traffic offenses, representing a significant increase in enforcement costs of up to 300 percent to encourage better road compliance.
