Senate grants ₦50 million to relatives of security staff and teachers lost in Oyo rescue

The Nigerian Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation to support the families of three security personnel and two teachers who died during the rescue of abducted Oyo schoolchildren.

In Abuja, the Senate has sanctioned a ₦50 million financial gift for the kin of five individuals who perished during the operation to save kidnapped students in Oyo State. The victims were held for 56 days before their release.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio introduced the motion during a plenary session, which received immediate support from all senators. Each family is set to be granted ₦10 million.

Akpabio acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Tinubu and security heads, including the Chief of Army Staff, the DSS Director-General, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Defence Minister, for the successful mission. However, he noted that the operation resulted in the tragic deaths of three security officers and two educators.

The fallen heroes include Lieutenant F. A. Isaac and Private Silas Musa from the Nigerian Army, along with Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force. Additionally, teachers Deacon John Olaleye and Michael Oyedokun lost their lives while in captivity.

Following a unanimous voice vote, Akpabio instructed the Senate leadership to deliver the funds directly to the families. He emphasized that this gesture is meant to acknowledge their immense sacrifice and provide modest support to those left behind.
