Senate Approves Fasina as Non-Career Ambassador Following Committee Review

Despite public opposition and allegations of misconduct, the Senate has confirmed Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina as a non-career ambassador.

On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina for the role of non-career ambassador. This decision moved forward despite vocal opposition from various civil society groups.

The Senate’s action was based on the findings of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. Senator Simon Lalong, representing the committee, formally requested the upper chamber to accept the nomination, highlighting the committee’s due diligence. During the debate, some lawmakers expressed dissent, but Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Abdul Ningi backed the committee’s recommendation.

The committee addressed specific concerns regarding Fasina by noting that previous investigations conducted by the university’s governing council and the Nigeria Police found the allegations against him to be without merit. Senate President Akpabio emphasized that the confirmation process relied on official documentation from the police, the Department of State Services, and the university administration, urging members to disregard unverified claims.

This vote occurred shortly after a coalition of civil society organizations held a demonstration at the National Assembly on July 7. The group, represented by lawyer Adeyemo Amira, had urged lawmakers to pause the process due to unresolved allegations of misconduct and ongoing court cases. They argued that these issues should be settled through the judicial system to protect accountability and Nigeria’s standing abroad.
