Commemorating a Fallen Protector
Amin Abdullah, a security guard and father of eight, is being celebrated for his bravery after he died protecting congregants during an attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Tazheen Nizam, representing the Council on American-Islamic Relations-San Diego, confirmed his identity following the tragedy that claimed three lives.
Official Recognition of Bravery
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl described Abdullah’s conduct as heroic during a recent briefing, noting that his quick responses prevented further casualties. Alongside Abdullah, victims identified as Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad also lost their lives when two teenage assailants opened fire before ending their own lives.
Remembering a Community Pillar
Those close to Abdullah describe him as a deeply kind individual who dedicated over ten years to safeguarding the mosque. According to Shaykh Uthman Ibn Farooq, Abdullah pursued his security role specifically to shield the innocent. The mosque leadership echoed this sentiment, honoring him as a man who prioritized the safety of others until his final moments.
Investigation Into the Tragedy
The incident began after a parent contacted police regarding her son’s disappearance and potential suicidal intent. Law enforcement later discovered the victims at the Islamic Center, followed by the discovery of the two suspects, ages 17 and 18, deceased nearby. Chief Wahl confirmed the shooting is being investigated as a hate crime linked to hateful rhetoric.
