Russian Missile Attacks Result in Nine Deaths and Cathedral Fire in Kyiv

A wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine killed nine people, injured many, and damaged a historic Unesco-listed cathedral in Kyiv.

A recent series of Russian military strikes across Ukraine has resulted in nine confirmed fatalities and multiple injuries. In Kyiv, a significant blaze broke out at the historic 11th-century Dormition Cathedral. Four individuals were killed during the bombardment of the capital, while five rescue personnel lost their lives while battling a fire in Kharkiv.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko condemned the damage to the cathedral, which is part of the Unesco-listed Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, as a violent attack on national heritage. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed that Ukraine intends to seek an immediate response from Unesco regarding the site. The cathedral, originally ruined in World War II, was reconstructed roughly 25 years ago.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the aerial assaults left more than 140,000 residents in Kyiv without power and caused widespread damage to residential areas. Separately, officials reported that a Ukrainian drone strike in Tula, Russia, resulted in three deaths and three injuries, including a child. These military actions occur just before a scheduled G7 summit in France, while diplomatic discussions regarding the conflict continue between President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Donald Trump.
