Russia Detains Romanian Suspected of Espionage for Ukraine
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) revealed on Friday the arrest of a Romanian citizen accused of spying on Russian military installations on behalf of Ukrainian intelligence.
This arrest adds fuel to the already tense relations between Moscow and Bucharest, which have been strained due to allegations of Russian interference in Romania’s presidential election.
According to the FSB, the individual, a 2002-born Romanian, was apprehended for allegedly collecting and transmitting classified details about the locations of Russian air defence systems in the southern city of Sochi.
The FSB claims the suspect was working under Ukraine’s direction, with the goal of passing on sensitive information.
State media footage showed the arrest, with FSB agents in camouflage subduing the suspect. In a separate interrogation video, the detainee, whose face was blurred, admitted to sharing the location of a Russian air defence battery with a Ukrainian intelligence contact named Vladimir.
This incident occurs amid escalating diplomatic tensions between Russia and Romania. Both countries have recently expelled diplomats and military attaches. Romania has accused Russia of interfering in its democratic process, particularly during last year’s presidential election.
Moscow was blamed for orchestrating a social media campaign to support Calin Georgescu, a pro-Russian candidate, which led to an unexpected surge in his votes during the first round of elections.
Romanian authorities annulled the results, citing foreign interference, though Moscow has denied any involvement in the election.
