Nigerian Government To Link Credit Checks To NIN
The Nigerian government has announced plans to implement a policy requiring citizens to link their credit scores to their National Identification Numbers (NIN).
According to the Director General of the Consumer Credit Corporation, Uzoma Nwagba, the move aims to create a reliable credit system nationwide. He disclosed this during a press conference at the State House presidential villa on Tuesday.
He explained that the policy aims to unify credit data from all financial institutions into a centralized national credit bureau.
According to him, once implemented, the policy will represent a major transformation in Nigeria’s credit system.
“Your NIN becomes your financial anchor. Whether you’ve borrowed from a bank, micro-lender, or fintech, your record will be tracked and will carry consequences,” Nwagba stated.
“There will be no hiding place,” he warned loan defaulters.
He added, “This is not about punishment. It’s about promoting discipline and rewarding financial responsibility.”
